SUMMARY

"The photos in which we encounter on the pages of this book lead us towards particular enclosures, the fallow lands situated in contemporary Berlin tenement housing. We immediately recognise these spaces as something ambiguous, in between spheres which used to be defined differently. 1. It is easy to imagine that just behind closed doors and around invisible corners are individual spaces of living. It is there where the life of individuals, small groups, families is sustained and reproduced on a daily basis. Every flat encapsulates the complexities of biological subsistence, which appear here hand-in-hand with an affective labour of relations." ¹

No Shoes In The House is a story about coming back home. Series is situated in the contemporary Berlin tenement housing where more than 50 % of all the apartments are apartments for rent. How does a transitional character of place influence the actions of tenants? Where does the private space end and public space begin? Photos from buildings staircases explore hesitancy between those two environments. Action and personalization undertaken by inhabitants appears as a trial and error method in the frame of architecture. We follow a slow disintegration marked with traces of passing time and domestication of common area. The temporary becomes personal.
